* * *

She may not have stated it outright, but the meaning of her words was clear. She would not be following in her mother’s footsteps.

Luther refused to be disappointed. To be so would be unforgivable. And yet, if his reaction to her was any indication, if she did decide to follow the same path as her mother had she would have her pick of men who wanted to make her his mistress.

He fought not to stroke his gaze over her body one more time. It was a luscious, curvaceous body made for giving and receiving pleasure. Never had his reaction to a woman been so intense and so immediate. He hardly knew her, and yet every time he looked at her he could not help but picture how she must look naked, spread out before him, waiting for him, eager for him.

He coughed so he would not groan and attempted to push that image out of his fevered mind. Perhaps if he continued to question her about her plans, that would drive out the wild, rampant impulses surging within him. There was nothing like talking business to cool a man’s ardour.

‘Tell me more about your planned enterprise,’ he asked.

And please make it as dull as possible.

She looked at him and smiled. Bad start. He did not need his attention drawn to those full red lips. He did not need to be reminded how the bow of the top lip seemed to be permanently pursed, as if waiting to be kissed. Nor did his mind need to go off onto unwanted tangents of all the things he could imagine her doing with those lips.

‘I’m so excited about your mother’s offer to help.’ She smiled at him once more and he couldn’t help but smile back. ‘It is hard, if not impossible, for women to get financing for any business enterprise. Without her input it will take many, many years for my business to get established. Your mother really is a life saver.’

This was not the boring business conversation he had hoped for. He did not need those big brown eyes to shine with enthusiasm, did not need to see colour tingeing her cheeks, or to think about other ways he could cause her to flush.

‘Now I’ll be able to buy several sewing machines immediately, hire a team of seamstresses and premises. I really can’t thank you and your mother enough.’

Luther had done nothing. His mother had been left her own money in his father’s will and had inherited property from her own family. What she chose to do with that money was her own business, but it was nice to have Miss Daglish’s gratitude.

‘And I assume you intend to make a tidy profit from this business.’ That was a suitably boring question, one that would hopefully distract his mind from images of taking Miss Daglish right here, beside the stream, and to hell with the consequences.

‘Oh, yes, of course. Your mother should make a healthy return on her investment.’

He nodded,
